Search continues for siblings feared drowned in Sarawak river

MUKAH: A search and rescue operation continues Wednesday (March 19) for a pair of school-age siblings who are feared drowned in Sungai Mukah, Sarawak.

Dexper Kiu Kuang Wei,10, and his seven-year-old sister Susie were swept away by currents while bathing in the river near the Yellow Bridge on Tuesday (March 18).

State Fire and Rescue Department in a statement on Wednesday said the search was restarted after efforts on Tuesday failed to locate the siblings.

Mukah Fire and Rescue received a distress call at 4.23pm on Tuesday about the incident that occurred at about 3.50pm.

The children, who did not know how to swim, had been rapidly pulled underwater by the strong currents. Their mother’s attempt to rescue them had proven futile.

The search operation involving four firefighters continues, with assistance by police and Civil Defence Force personnel.
