KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Moto Day event, now in its ninth edition, carries an important message for the motoring community to always prioritise discipline, safety, responsibility and sportsmanship, says Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
However, the Chief Minister noted that roads should not be used as racing circuits and urged road users to channel the desire to race through legitimate, safe and properly organised platforms.
"Show that the motoring community is a responsible one that respects other road users and always abides by the law," he said when officiating the event here on Sunday (Sept 13).
In his speech, read out by state Education, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk James Ratib, he said the event has grown into a platform that brings together youths, the motoring community, entrepreneurs, government agencies and various other parties in an atmosphere of friendship and camaraderie..
However, it has been reported that some participants abuse the platform, sparking irritation, concern and anger among other road users.
Social media users have vented their frustration over dangerous and inconsiderate behaviour on the road, as well as large amounts of trash left after the event and noise from constant engine revving.
They have urged the authorities and organisers to set stricter rules and ensure participants maintain cleanliness, road discipline, and respect for other motorists.
Hajiji noted that the event has main thrusts aimed at developing Sabah youths who are active, knowledgeable, competitive, united and free from negative influences.
He called on all riders and participants to turn their passion into a positive force by becoming disciplined, mature and responsible road users.
