Former drug addict finds purpose

PASIR PUTEH: Being placed in a drug rehabilitation centre may not be easy for recovering addicts, but it offers hope for positive change and a brighter future.

Nik Affezah Nik Ab Ghani, 45, said the painful experience of falling into drug addiction made her never want to look back.

The former patient of the Bachok Narcotics Addiction Rehabilitation Centre (Puspen) has come to terms with her past and is focused on the future.

“When I was trapped in drug addiction, my faith was weak – I neglected my prayers, fasting and other religious duties. The RM900 salary I earned from working at a bakery was never enough to support myself and my family because I prioritised buying drugs,” she said.

Nik Affezah shared that during her 17-month rehabilitation, she gained valuable knowledge.

Her time at the centre was filled with beneficial activities, including religious classes, motivational talks, cooking and batik painting.

Now a peer counsellor there, she believes that her difficult past serves as a powerful tool to guide and support other women trapped in drug addiction.
