KUALA LUMPUR: Online media streaming will be included in the amendments to the highly anticipated National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) Act, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
The Communications Minister said the plan reflects the shift in how media is consumed today.
“The way we consume media has changed drastically as viewing media through films is considered anachronistic and outdated; no one uses films to showcase media anymore.
“Instead, most media works are now consumed on mobile devices via streaming so this change is needed to be more aligned with the modern industry,” he said in his speech during the Raya Sama-Sama programme at Tun Abdul Razak Broadcasting and Information Institute (Ipptar) yesterday.
At the event, the Communications Ministry extended muchneeded aid to 76 out-of-work local film artistes and media practitioners.
Fifty of the artistes were given cash donations and 26 media practitioners received contributions from Tabung Kasih@Hawana.
Tabung Kasih@Hawana was established during the 2023 National Journalists’ Day (Hawana) as an initiative by the ministry to support media practitioners.
It is managed by Bernama.
All 76 recipients also received festive attire as well as shopping vouchers from both Mydin and Aeon Foundation Malaysia.
“This programme reflects the government’s appreciation for the significant contributions of veteran artistes and the important role of media practitioners in society even as times change,” Fahmi added.
