Hajiji said development is duty, not politically motivated

KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has dismissed opposition claims that recent project announcements are political tactics, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to resolving long-standing issues affecting the people.

He stressed that the government’s duty is to carry out development projects regardless of politics.

“The government exists to serve the people, and addressing their concerns, whether about water, electricity, roads, or infrastructure, is our responsibility.

“Whether we announce these projects or not, the fact remains that we are working to solve problems. This is not about winning votes; it is about fulfilling our duty,” he said.

Hajiji made these remarks after launching the Higher Education Students’ Assistance Scheme (Sentosa) at the Gaya Campus Teacher Education Institute, here, on Thursday (March 13).

He criticised the opposition for politicising development efforts, saying their accusations ignored the government’s ongoing work to improve infrastructure and essential services.

“The opposition complains when we announce projects and complains when we don’t. What do they actually want? We cannot afford to delay development just because an election is near,” he said.

Hajiji stressed that the government is actively addressing critical issues, particularly water and electricity supply, which have been long-standing concerns for Sabahans.

“Our announcements are backed by action. We are implementing solutions, not making empty promises. The ones engaging in rhetoric without solutions are the opposition,” he said.

His remarks were in response to criticism from Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, who claimed the recent spate of project announcements was a political tactic ahead of the upcoming 17th State Election, which is due in September this year.

Bung Moktar questioned the state government’s sincerity in resolving Sabah’s pressing issues, including basic infrastructure.

However, Hajiji reiterated that development efforts are not tied to political cycles but reflect an ongoing commitment to improving the people’s livelihoods.

“We are doing our job. Our focus is on delivering results, not political point-scoring,” he said.
