PUTRAJAYA: The discovery of the use of a lost MyKad led the National Registration Department (NRD) to expose a counterfeit identity card operation which produces forged MyKads.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said an individual complained that someone had used his MyKad, which was lost 12 years ago, to buy a phone in Cheras on Dec 11 last year.
“There was a case of a fake MyKad which went viral on March 7 of how someone’s MyKad was cloned," Saifuddin said at a media conference at the NRD headquarters here Thursday (March 13).
“An individual named Hafis Aliaziz (the complainant) shared on social media that his MyKad had been misused by another person, resulting in a financial loss of over RM14,000.
“The MyKad was allegedly used by the perpetrator to purchase an IPhone in Cheras on Dec 11, 2024,” said Saifuddin.
He added that an arrest was made last Friday at a house in Kampung Pandan Dalam in Kuala Lumpur, which later led to the 35-year old Malaysian being charged and found guilty of using a fake identification card and possessing a counterfeit MyKad.

“The judge sentenced the suspect to four months in prison from the date of arrest,” said Saifuddin.
He said that following the arrest of the first suspect, NRD was led to a counterfeit MyKad printing operation located in a residential unit in Pandan Indah, Ampang, Selangor.
“A raid on the residence resulted in the arrest of a 31-year-old male, who was found to be a Temporary Resident Identity Card (MyKas) holder. The suspect is the husband of a Malaysian citizen,” said Saifuddin.
He said that during the search, authorities discovered equipment used for producing counterfeit MyKad, along with other individuals' identity cards in the process of being forged inside a room in the house.
At the media conference, Saifuddin paraded Items seized, which included a laptop, printer, laminating machine, hard disk, and other tools.
“Additionally, six MyKad were found—two belonging to other individuals and four fake ones.
“The second suspect was charged at the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate's Court on Tuesday under Regulation 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007) for possession of a counterfeit MyKad and other individuals' identity cards,” said Saifuddin, who added that the second suspect was sentenced to 10 months and fined RM3,000.
