Google, Meta and X yet to get social media licences, says Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA: Meta, X (previously Twitter) and Google have yet to obtain application service provider (ASP) class licences for their social media platforms, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

The Communications Minister said the three companies each had concerns or issues to be resolved first.

Fahmi said Meta wanted to meet the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission before finalising its application.

“X has argued that it doesn't have enough Malaysian users to need a social media licence.

“We have decided to give it some leeway for now but the Ministry will set an undisclosed final deadline for all platforms to obtain their ASP soon.

“Regardless of the issue or concern, this must come to an end,” Fahmi told a press conference at the ministry's office on Wednesday (March 12).

The requirement for a licence became mandatory on Jan 1 to help regulate the widespread disruptive and offensive content on social media platforms.

The requirement was also meant to help combat rising cases of cybercrime, including online fraud and gambling, as well as cyberbullying and sexual crimes against children in the country.
