KOTA KINABALU: A Chinese national who sustained serious injuries when the ceiling of a restaurant collapsed, had to have her left leg amputated.
The woman’s husband, who requested not to be named, confirmed that doctors could not save her leg and amputation had to be done immediately.
“She still needs a second surgery as she had also injured her spine,” he said.
He added that the doctors will be discussing a treatment plan with them.
However, the husband declined to talk about the incident, where the flooring of the storey above collapsed. The restaurant is in a four-storey building.
The Chinese halal restaurant where the couple was having dinner at on March 7 is operated by their son.
For the past two years, he has been running the restaurant at the rented premises in the Segama commercial area, in the city’s central business district.
According to the man, he and his wife were on holiday in Sabah to visit their son and help him with his restaurant.
“We never expected this to happen to us,” he said, adding that his son was in discussions with the owner of the premises.
“As a family, we are very grateful for people’s concern regarding the incident,” he said.
It is learned that the tenant had complained about water leaks and occasional concrete pieces falling from the ceiling above, which was also the floor of the first-floor units.
Residents living in the units above the restaurant have been evacuated while investigations are underway on the structural integrity of the building.
