> Underaged Malaysians as young as 14 years old are crossing the border to Thailand to get married.
A Harian Metro report quoting the Narathiwat Islamic Council said the council had received requests from Malaysian couples aged between 14 and 16.
“There were those who came by themselves and asked to be married as they could not get their guardians’ consent back home.
“There were also those who came with their guardians and asked to be married as they claimed there was too much bureaucracy to get the underaged couple to get married in Malaysia,” said the Narathiwat Islamic Council deputy president Abdul Aziz Che Mamat.
“Although it is perceived that it is easier to get married over here, we do not conduct nikah for underaged couples.
“We will only conduct nikah for those above 17 years old.”
He also said that there were also cases of those in their sixties with very young spouses who had crossed the Malaysian-Thailand border to get married.
