PETALING JAYA: Malaysians must reject all forms of provocation that could undermine the unity of the people and threaten the harmony of the nation, says Datuk T. Murugiah.
In a statement, the Foundation for the Development of Tamil Schools in Malaysia president said the country's diversity should be seen as an advantage and not a cause of division among the people.
"Malaysia is a unique country built on diversity in race, culture, and religion.
"This diversity is not a weakness but a strength that has shaped Malaysia into a harmonious and progressive nation.
"Therefore, it is the responsibility of every citizen to ensure that racial unity continues to be strengthened for the future of our next generations.
"In today’s challenging world, we must not allow racial and religious differences to become sources of division.
"Instead, we should take a more mature approach by respecting each other’s beliefs and cultures," Murugiah, who is also an MIC vice-president said on Friday (March 7).
He added that tolerance, mutual respect, and understanding are the key elements in building a united society.
Commenting on the recent case of Era FM radio announcers who allegedly mocked a Hindu ceremony, Murugiah said such acts have threatened the country's harmony.
"Recently, we have witnessed several incidents that have touched on racial and religious sensitivities in our country.
"For example, the case involving Era FM radio announcers, which sparked outrage among the Indian community.
"In the past, we have also seen cases of insults towards Islam, such as disrespect towards the call to prayer (Azan) or insensitive comments on social media.
"Similarly, there have been cases of vandalism and insults against Christianity.
"These incidents not only hurt the feelings of those affected but also threatens the harmony of our nation if not handled wisely," he said.
Murugiah, who is also a former deputy minister, urged the people to play their role in maintaining the harmony.
"Every individual plays a crucial role in maintaining this harmony.
"We must reject all forms of provocation that could undermine our unity, whether on social media, in workplaces, or in our daily lives.
"Any issues that have the potential to cause racial tension should be addressed wisely through open and respectful dialogue.
"I urge all Malaysians to focus on nation-building efforts, including in education, economic development, and social welfare," he said.
