KUALA LUMPUR: Artificial intelligence will be used to investigate commercial crime cases and help officers optimise their time, says Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf.
The Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director said that by using AI, investigators could focus on several cases at once.
“In the context of enforcement and investigating commercial crime, AI can be used to assist in various stages of the investigation.
“It has the potential to assist in analysing forensic data and texts as well as identify suspicious financial transactions,” he said when contacted.
CCID officers will also be using chatbot technology to analyse statements collected in the course of an investigation.
On cases involving commercial crime, Comm Ramli said 9,431 investigation papers were opened between Jan 1 and March 4 involving more than RM500mil in losses.
“The number of IPs opened saw a spike of 48% compared to 6,354 cases during the same period last year.
“The number of losses showed a 9% increase compared to RM458.8mil recorded last year,” he said.
Comm Ramli said online scams contributed the largest number of commercial crime cases.
As of March 4, a total of 8,322 scam cases have been recorded, representing 88.2% of commercial crime cases to-date.
“The losses have reached RM368.7mil or 73.% of the total losses from commercial crime cases,” he said.
“Investment scams contributed the largest amount of losses at RM241.6mil.
“In terms of number of cases, telecommunication scams recorded the highest number this year with 3,706 cases.
“Among the other top types of scams are e-commerce (1,690 cases), investments (1,338) and loans (928),” he said.
