Sosma being reviewed for reforms

PUTRAJAYA: Efforts to improve the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) 2012 is currently underway to align with the reform agenda of the government, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said.

Speaking to the media after a breaking of fast event at BoraOmbak here, he said several aspects were being reviewed following discussions at the Cabinet level.

Among them, he said, are offences that would allow bail.

“More importantly is Section 13 which is on bailable, non-bailable and unbailable offences. There are 73 offences which Section 13 states that as long as an arrest is made under Sosma, bail cannot be granted.

“We are currently studying the 73 offences and will suggest that several of them (offences) be allowed bail by returning the power to grant bail to the courts,” he said.

Another issue being looked at is detainees who are held until the legal process has been completed.

On the use of artificial intelligence (AI), he said the ministry will have to keep up with the times.

He added that AI was being implemented to “solve the problems of the rakyat”.

“That is why I have introduced the slogan AI for KDN, KDN for AI. The logic is simple; the ministry has no choice but to embrace AI,” he said.
