No plans for compulsory urine tests for concertgoers, Dewan Rakyat told

KUALA LUMPUR: There are currently no plans to mandate urine tests for concert-goers, says Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

“For now, the government has no plans to implement the urine test as one of the conditions for the performance of a concert.

“However, the government will examine the need and appropriateness of any recommendations and changes to SOPs from time to time based on discussions with all agencies and stakeholders,” said Fahmi in a parliamentary written reply dated March 3.

Fahmi said his ministry, via the Central Agency for Application for Filming and Performance by Foreign Artists (Puspal), has provided guidelines that touch on necessary safety aspects involving foreign artists for performance organisers.

“Among them, organisers must ensure that there are no activities relating to smoking, consuming alcohol and drugs before, during and after the performance,” added Fahmi

Fahmi was responding to Aminolhuda Hassan (PH-Sri Gading), who asked about the ministry’s plans to screen the urine of concert-goers to combat drug abuse.

On Jan 7, the Selangor state government recommended compulsory urine tests as an SOP for concert attendees to curb drug use.

The proposal came after four individuals died at the Pinkfish Concert in Bandar Sunway, Subang Jaya.
