PUTRAJAYA: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is a suspect in an ongoing Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation, says Tan Sri Azam Baki.

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said this at a press conference on the matter at the MACC HQ here on Monday (March 3)

“In this matter I can say that he is a suspect in this case. Firstly, asset declarations have been required as per Section 36 of the MACC Act," said Azam.

“Secondly, the money was found with links to him. We will need his statement on the discovery,” he added.

Regarding reports that Ismail Sabri’s former private secretary Datuk Nazimah Hashim was overseas, the MACC chief denied the allegations.

“Her statement has been taken. She is still in the country,” he said.

Azam then added that the Yayasan Keluarga Malaysia bank accounts are not frozen.

“However the accounts of the former Prime Minister are being investigated and we will seek explanations from him on all his accounts," he said.

A total of 13 bank accounts worth around RM2mil have been frozen as part of the investigations.

Prior to this, the MACC said that it will summon former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob again to assist in investigations regarding several corruption and money laundering cases.

According to sources, MACC had taken the statement of the Bera MP last week.

"This is based on the latest information and intelligence received. MACC has called and interviewed him (Ismail Sabri) for about five hours to assist in the investigation. MACC does not rule out the possibility of summoning him again, but it will depend on time and circumstances, especially his health," reported Sinar Harian on Saturday (March 1).

Previously, four former officials, including two individuals with the title 'Datuk,' who are linked to Ismail Sabri, were remanded by MACC on February 21, on suspicion of being involved in corruption.
