End of the road for overloaded haulage trucks

PORT KLANG: Haulage trucks carrying loads beyond the permitted capacity will be duly dealt with beginning May 1 this year.

Port Klang Authority (PKA) chairman Ean Yong Hian Wah said following enforcement, haulage trucks ferrying goods to and from Port Klang’s Northport and Westport cannot exceed the combined vehicle weight (BGK).

“The National Logistics Centre, which is under the Transport Ministry, has instructed PKA to fully enforce restrictions on haulage trucks carrying loads exceeding the BGK to or from the port.

“Import transactions will be reviewed at booking level and bookings will be rejected if the total load exceeds the BGK,’’ Ean Yong told a press conference yesterday.

He added that export transactions will be weighed at the port entrance and if the trucks are caught violating the BGK limit thrice, they will not be allowed to enter the ports anymore.

However, Ean Yong clarified that it will be the vehicles that are blacklisted as opposed to the companies that own them.

According to Ean Yong, the decision was made at the National Logistics Task Force (NLTF) meeting which was chaired by Transport Minister Anthony Loke on Nov 25, 2024.

Ean Yong said the decision to implement the restriction was made following a study carried out between Dec 10 to Dec 31 last year to determine the number of vehicles that exceeded the BGK and how many were registered with PKA.

“The study was carried out in both Northport and Westport and it was estimated that some 20% to 30% of the vehicles exceeded the BGK and did not comply with the Transport Ministry’s regulations.”

He said logistics companies dealing with Port Klang were required to register with the PKA and so far 340 companies had complied and registered their haulier trucks with the authority.

Ean Yong added all haulier companies using Northport and Westport have been briefed thrice by the PKA on the matter.

The reason behind the decision, added  Ean Yong, was to curb damage to roads as well as prevent accidents.

He said the damage to roads in Port Klang has become an alarming concern for players in the logistics industry and it also tarnished Port Klang’s image.

In addition to this, the extensive road damage also impacted the safety of road users and their maintenance incurred high costs.

“One of the main factors that contribute to road damage is haulage trucks carrying loads exceeding the BGK and this has also contributed to several fatal accidents in the past,” he said.
