Prominent figures among witnesses to be called up in probe into four linked to ex-PM, says MACC chief

KUALA LUMPUR: Several individuals, including prominent figures will be called up by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in connection with the arrests of four officers linked to former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the individuals will be called up as witnesses in the ongoing case.

"The investigation is still being conducted despite the arrests of the four officers.

"We will call up the witnesses soon," he said when contacted on Monday (Feb 24).

Azam, however, refused to elaborate on the prominent figures that will be called up by the graft busters.

Asked on a large amount of cash supposedly seized by the MACC, Azam refused to comment.

It was reported that four officers linked to the ninth prime minister have been remanded over allegations of money laundering and corruption, said to involve millions of ringgit.

It is learnt that the four – two of them with the title of "Datuk" – were summoned to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya last Thursday (Feb 20) to have their statements recorded.

Sources familiar with the investigation said three of the suspects held senior positions at the Prime Minister’s Office during Ismail Sabri’s tenure.

The position of the fourth suspect remains unclear.

Azam had confirmed that the individuals were being investigated for alleged money laundering and corruption.

“I can confirm that this is the premise of our investigation involving these individuals,” he said.

However, he did not offer further details, including the exact amount of money involved in the case.
