Elderly man nabbed for making homemade shotguns in Johor

KOTA TINGGI: A senior citizen has been arrested for making homemade shotguns using skills he learned from a relative.

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Yusof Othman said the 65-year-old suspect’s activities were uncovered during a raid at his home in Ladang Pasir Panjang here at 12pm last Friday (Feb 21).

“The raid was conducted based on a tip-off.

“The suspect does not have a licence to possess or produce firearms and he has been making homemade firearms for illegal hunting,” he said in a press conference here on Monday (Feb 24).

Police also found a single barrel shotgun unit and 170 buckshot ammunitions in the house, along with 26 units of shotgun components, 11 machine parts and other firearm components such as hand guards and barrels.

“During the raid, we also arrested a 39-year-old man who was believed to be a customer who came to the house to repair his firearms.

“The suspects tested negative for drugs but they both possess prior drug records,” said Supt Yusof, adding that they would be investigated under Section 8(a) of the Firearms Act 1960.

He added that investigations are ongoing to determine how long the senior citizen has been making homemade firearms and whether he has sold them to anyone.

Supt Yusof advised the public not to get involved in illegal firearms activities as it is against the law.
