Perak cops raid job scam call centre in Pangkor, 15 arrested

IPOH: Police have arrested 15 people, including a married couple who rented out a house in Pulau Pangkor that was used as a job scam call centre.

Perak police chief Datuk Comm Noor Hisam Nordin said police raided the house at about 9.45pm on Feb 21.

He said police discovered the 15 syndicate members were running a job scam call centre in the house, targeting victims from China.

"The suspects include 13 Chinese nationals aged from 26 to 41 and the local couple aged 61 and 63," he said in a statement on Sunday (Feb 23).

Comm Noor Hisam said the married couple not only rented their house to the scammers but also supplied food to syndicate members.

He said police also seized 12 laptops, six modems and 88 mobile phones.

"The suspects have been remanded for four days until Tuesday (Feb 25).

"The case is being investigated under Section 420, and Section 120 (b) of the Penal Code," he said.

He added that police would also verify the status of the Chinese nationals arrested with the Immigration Department.

"If there are any violations or misuse of visit passes, action will be taken under the Immigration Act 1959," he said.
