Victims lose RM1.8mil in RM2.2mil construction scam in Sibu

SIBU: Several individuals were scammed out of RM1.8mil in a construction scheme with a total value of RM2.2mil.

The National Consumer Action Council has advised the public to exercise caution when selecting a contractor for housing projects.

Its Sibu branch chairman Lucas Lau revealed at a press conference on Saturday (Feb 22), that the victims were from across the state, including Bintulu, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Kanowit, Selangau, Mukah, Dalat, Daro, Sri Aman, and Miri.

Lau stated that the branch had received a report from a group of 20 individuals on January 4, claiming they had been deceived by a construction company registered with the Companies Commission of Malaysia.

The victims were mostly first-time homebuyers as well as homeowners seeking renovations for their properties.

"The company’s fraudulent scheme began with advertisements on Facebook. The contractor also actively organised roadshows in the central region to attract victims, showcasing housing plans and brochures of various house models. Additionally, the contractor appointed agents to recruit victims from December 2022 to November 2023," he explained.

Lau added that the contractor used the tagline "Building a house on your own land" to lure landowners.

The company also offered other services, such as home renovations.

To convince potential clients, the contractor provided written agreements.

"However, after the victims made their initial payments, most of the construction or renovation work was only completed between five to 10%," he said.

According to Lau, when his department visited the company’s office, they discovered it had long been shut down. Attempts to contact the contractor were unsuccessful, and the company’s Facebook page had also been removed.

"We have advised the victims to lodge police reports. We also urge more victims to come forward so that the relevant authorities can take action," he said.

The public is reminded to exercise caution when selecting contractors by checking their backgrounds and ensuring they are certified by the government.
