KUALA LUMPUR: Liabilities for the civil servants pension scheme is expected to reach RM46.36bil by the year 2030, the Dewan Rakyat was told.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa said that the total amount of financial implications due to the scheme have been rising over the years with RM32bil in 2023 and RM33.7bil last year.
“The existing pension scheme for civil servants who are still in service and retired is still being continued.
“However, the financial implications of the pension benefit is rising every year,” she said in a written parliamentary answer on Wednesday (Feb 19).
She was responding to a question by Muhammad Ismi Mat Taib (PN-Parit) who had asked the government to explain the status of the pension scheme for civil servants.
Dr Zaliha said that the proposed implementation of permanent appointments and contributions to replace existing schemes is still being studied.
She added that this was to ensure best strategies could be implemented with benefits for new hires and the government.
“Engagements with the relevant stakeholders are still ongoing which includes the Employees Provident Fund and Finance Ministry to gain input and views on an inclusive approach while ensuring a more sustainable financial management for the government,” she said.
Last year, it was announced that there would be a new policy on future civil servants contributing to the EPF, replacing the pension scheme.
