A PRIEST in India was given a “water burial” in a river according to the custom of the sect he belonged to, Makkal Osai reported.

Mahant Satyendra Das, 85, who was the chief priest of a temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, died of a stroke on Feb 12.

The funeral rites were attended by thousands of people.

His body was then taken on a procession surrounded by temple officials, representatives of Hindu organisations and political party members before being brought to the Saryu River by boat.

He was released from the boat with heavy stones tied to the body.

Satyendra belonged to the Ramanandi sect of the Vaishnavas tradition.

> Despite having just one student, SJK (T) Bukit Fraser will not be closed down, Makkal Osai also reported.

It will remain open for the Year Three pupil.

According to the report, discussions had been held with the school management to find ways to increase enrolment.
