KUCHING: Sarawak is strengthening ties with Commonwealth business leaders in renewable energy, digital economy and aerospace as part of efforts to foster international investment and technological advancement.

Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC) deputy chairman Lord Hugo Swire highlighted Sarawak's development of green hydrogen, digital transformation and the semiconductor industry as potential areas for collaboration.

"Sarawak is demonstrating remarkable ambition in fostering investment across multiple industries.

"From renewable energy and oil and gas to education and cybersecurity, the state is actively positioning itself as a dynamic investment hub," he said after a courtesy visit to Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan here on Monday (Feb 17).

He added that CWEIC was committed to strengthening collaboration with Sarawak, following up on discussions initiated during its chairman Lord Jonathan Peter Marland's visit a year ago.

CWEIC is a non-profit organisation promoting trade and investment across the 56 Commonwealth member states.

Swire's visit is expected to pave the way for stronger UK-Sarawak economic cooperation and enhanced strategic partnerships in emerging industries.

A delegation of Sarawakian businesses is set to visit Britain during the Commonwealth Trade and Investment Summit in April, further strengthening ties.

"The Sarawak government is ambitious and this is an exciting time for investors to engage with its forward-thinking initiatives," Swire said.

Awang Tengah welcomed the collaboration, saying Sarawak was ready to work with partners in Britain to expand opportunities in various sectors.

"The UK has long been a valued trade and investment partner for Sarawak.

"We look forward to deepening our collaboration, especially in high-value industries such as aerospace, renewable energy, and digital innovation," he said.

During his visit, Swire was briefed by SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd on Sarawak's hydrogen economy and its plans to export green hydrogen.

He also met SMD Semiconductor Sdn Bhd to discuss the potential for UK-Sarawak partnerships in the high-tech manufacturing sector.
