Bangsa Johor initiative reviewed every six months, says state education exco member

JOHOR BARU: The new Bangsa Johor school initiative will be reviewed at least every six months to assess its effectiveness, says state executive councillor Aznan Tamin.

The Johor Information and Education Committee chairman said the pilot project involving four primary and secondary schools will be closely monitored to ensure it aligns with the state government's aspirations.

"The first term of the Bangsa Johor school starts on Monday (Feb 17), but we will only be able to see initial results after two to three weeks.

"It will take some time for us to fully gauge the impact of this initiative, and its success will depend on the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results of our students.

"However, we will still conduct a review every six months to a year to assess the effectiveness of the initiative and its learning methods," he said, adding that students’ progress will also be checked monthly.

Aznan, who was monitoring the first day of school at SK Seri Kota Puteri 4 here on Monday (Feb 17), also told reporters that parents will be briefed about the initiative’s objectives for Bangsa Johor.

"We will hold an engagement session with teachers and parents on Feb 20.

"We are including them (parents) so they understand the intentions and goals of the Johor state government,” he said.

He added that 90 teachers involved in the initiative will also be trained at Singapore’s National Institute of Education (NIE) in April.

“We have started sending teachers to Singapore in Phases since November last year and the next batch will be attending the training in April,” he said.

On Feb 1, Aznan said that a total of 212 primary and secondary school teachers will be attending the training in Singapore in phases to obtain certification for the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Sekolah Bangsa Johor is an education initiative by the Johor state government focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects and English proficiency.

The pilot programme, which starts Monday (Feb 17), involves four selected schools, including SK Seri Kota Puteri 4.

The other three schools are SMK Kota Puteri 2, SMK Tasek Utara, and SK Tasek Utara.
