KOTA KINABALU: All 36 schools affected by the recent floods in Sabah reopened for the first day of the 2025/2026 academic session on Monday (Feb 17), following a month-long holiday.
Sabah Education Department director Datuk Raisin Saidin confirmed that cleaning operations at the flood-hit schools were completed in time for their scheduled reopening.
“Despite nearly two weeks of heavy rainfall and intermittent flooding, all Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) students were able to sit for their exams without any issues,” added Raisin.
He added that the Education Ministry recently allocated RM63mil to assist schools severely affected by the floods, with the funds used for cleaning, minor repairs and replacing damaged or destroyed furniture.
The floods displaced thousands of residents from 13 districts, forcing them to evacuate their homes and temporarily shelter at some than 50 relief centres across the districts.
Kinabatangan marked the end of Sabah's last relief centre on Sunday (Feb 16), following the closure of centres in other affected districts, including Keningau, Tambunan, Kota Marudu, Kota Belud, Telupid, Pitas, Beluran, Lahad Datu, Sandakan, Beaufort, Tongod and Paitan.
