KUALA SELANGOR: PKR’s top leadership will collectively decide whether the president and deputy president posts will be open to contest in the party’s elections this year, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“Let them (party leadership) decide. I won’t interfere.
“Let democracy take its course.
“Whether there is a contest or not, they will decide on their own,” he told reporters after the groundbreaking ceremony of the Residensi Rakyat Programme (PRR) in Bestari Jaya here yesterday.
The Prime Minister and PKR president said this in response to suggestions that the party’s two top posts should remain uncontested to preserve unity.
PKR is reportedly considering whether or not to allow contests in the two top posts in the party election, scheduled for May.
Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who serves as Economy Minister, is currently Anwar’s deputy.
The suggestion to keep the positions uncontested stems from internal discussions, according to PKR International Bureau chairman Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin, who is also Anwar’s political secretary.
“The view is to ensure internal stability within the party and to facilitate service to the people, given that the next general election is only about two years away,” Shamsul Iskandar was reported as saying on Feb 1.
On Jan 26, PKR secretary-general Dr Fuziah Salleh confirmed that party elections will proceed on May 24, with contests open for all posts on the Supreme Council, Women’s wing and the Youth wing for the 2025-2028 term.
