PETALING JAYA: Four individuals, including a parent and child, were killed in three separate accidents at different locations in Sarawak within 24 hours on Friday.
In the first incident, a parent and child lost their lives, while two other family members sustained serious injuries after their MPV collided with a 10-tonne lorry in Jalan Gedong, Simunjan.
According to Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department Deputy Director Tiong Ling Hii, they received an emergency call at around 1:26 pm and immediately deployed a fire engine and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) ambulance from the Simunjan and Serian Fire Stations.
"Upon arrival at the scene, the team found the driver trapped inside the vehicle, while the other three occupants were thrown out of the car.
"After being extricated by the fire department, the driver, identified as Sim Geok Chiew, 37, was pronounced dead.
"Also killed was the victim’s child, Alisia Sim, 11, who had been ejected from the vehicle,” he was quoted by Astro Awani.
The other two victims, believed to be the victim’s 36-year-old wife and their six-year-old child, survived but suffered serious injuries.
Both were rushed to Simunjan Hospital for further treatment.
In a separate incident at Bukit BLD, Jalan Miri-Marudi, one person was killed and another seriously injured after a cement lorry they were travelling in lost control and skidded off the road.
According to Ling Hii, the fire department received a report at approximately 1:58pm and promptly dispatched a fire engine with four personnel from the Marudi Fire Station to the scene.
"It took the team over two hours, using an excavator belonging to a plantation company, to pull the lorry out before the victim could be extricated."
However, the identity of the deceased was not disclosed.
In the third incident, a timber lorry driver was killed at Jalan Merudum Dam, Belaga, after losing control of the vehicle and crashing off the roadside.
Ling Hii stated that the fire department received a distress call at around 8:36pm and deployed a fire engine and four personnel from the Belaga Fire Station to the location.
"Upon arrival more than two hours later, the team discovered a victim pinned under the timber logs."
"The team then took 27 minutes to extricate the victim, using an excavator to move the lorry and timber logs."
The victim was later identified as Muhie Nawan, 44.
