Loan sharks harass family over late brother’s debt

KUALA LUMPUR: A family is being harassed by loan sharks who refuse to disclose the outstanding debt of their late relative.

For 52-year-old Chey, the nightmare began in November last year when her brother tragically took his own life.

In January, she started receiving calls from loan sharks claiming that her late brother owed them money.

This came as a shock, as she was unaware of any such arrangement. She also suspects that her brother’s death may have been linked to pressure from the loan sharks.

The family had a strained relationship with the deceased due to his history of borrowing money from them. Chey had not been in contact with her brother for three years before his passing.

Despite numerous requests to disclose the full amount owed, the loan sharks have refused, continuing instead to harass her family, including her elderly mother. They have also posted defamatory statements about the family on social media.

At a press conference held at Wisma MCA, MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong condemned the loan sharks’ actions, calling them deeply distressing.

"They are refusing to reveal the money owed. They are not loan sharks but extortionists," he said.

The family has lodged two police reports earlier this month.

Chong added that the department is drafting a letter to the police, urging them to investigate the matter under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
