Enforcement officer nabbed in KK for taking payoffs from transport firms


KOTA KINABALU: An enforcement officer has been arrested for allegedly receiving monthly bribes from transport companies in Sabah for about a year.

The man, in his 40s, was detained after giving his statement to graft busters at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office here on Thursday (Feb 13) night.

According to MACC sources, the suspect was said to have bagged almost RM100,000 between October 2023 and November last year in monthly payoffs ranging from RM300 to RM3,000.

These payments from some 30 companies were "protection fees" to prevent action against the companies' vehicles for breaking traffic rules, the sources said.

This arrest followed the detention of an assistant enforcement officer at the MACC office on Tuesday (Feb 11).

State MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrest when contacted and said the case is being investigated under the MACC Act 2009.

The suspect was released on RM20,000 MACC bail with one local surety, he added.
