Suspect sought in surau donation box theft in Kampung Tawas

IPOH: Police are looking for a suspect in connection with the theft of a surau donation box in Kampung Tawas near here.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said police had come across a viral video on Thursday (Feb 13) uploaded on social media, which shows an incident of an individual breaking into a surau’s donation box.

ACP Abang Zainal said on Jan 21 at about 3.03pm a police report was lodged related to the theft.

“An initial investigation revealed that the complainant, a 42-year-old local man who serves as the surau’s secretary, discovered that the money inside the box had been stolen.

“A review of the CCTV footage showed an unidentified male suspect cutting the padlock of the donation box using an electric metal cutter and taking all the cash inside,” he said in a statement in Thursday.

ACP Abang Zainal said the case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code.

He said police are actively tracking down the suspect involved in the incident.

“Police take this criminal act in a place of worship seriously and remain committed to combating crimes that threaten public safety and peace.

“Those who have information on the case are urged to come forward and provide statements to the investigation officer Sjn Nor Shila at 011-11454886,” he added.
