KUALA LUMPUR:Malaysia and Turkiye have agreed to focus on defence and public security cooperation to drive technological innovation and economic collaboration in the sector.

To support this collaboration, Sapura Secured Technologies (Sapura) and Aselsan A.S. from Turkiye have formed a joint venture to develop advanced technology solutions that meet the country's security needs.

This partnership also introduces and markets innovative solutions in the national market, strengthening their position in the global defence and public security industry.

"This partnership strengthens the country's technological sovereignty in critical fields, including the implementation of Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity," the company said in a statement.

The two companies are working together to introduce advanced SDR implementations to ensure the defence and public security sectors benefit from critical communications and the best C2 communication technology capabilities.

"A long-term capability development programme involving technology transfer (ToT) to strengthen Malaysia's defence and public sectors is also emphasised," the statement added.

A Business-to-Business (B2B) Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for Strategic Cooperation in SDR Communication Systems and Network-Based Command and Control Technology was signed by Sapura Group president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Shahril Shamsuddin and Aselsan chief executive officer Ahmet Akyol.

The document exchange took place during the Malaysia-Turkiye Business Forum at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC).

In conjunction with the official visit of Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Malaysia, a Note Exchange for Strategic Cooperation in Communication Systems between Sapura and Aselsan was signed.

The Note Exchange was signed by the National Security Council (MKN) director-general Raja Datuk Nushirwan Zainal Abidin and Turkish Defense Industries Agency (SSB) president Prof Dr Haluk Gorgun.

The event was also witnessed by Erdogan and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at Seri Perdana.

In addition, the companies emphasised that this commitment will make Malaysia a key hub for advanced defence and public security technology in the region.

“This initiative aims to drive innovation and enhance national security. With a combined experience of over 100 years between the two companies and Aselsan, this partnership is set to foster mutually beneficial technology-economic relations and boost the already excelled relationship between Turkiye and Malaysia,” the company concluded.
