KUALA LUMPUR: The Bukit Aman Narcotic Crime Investigation Department (NCID) will work with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in investigating the shooting incident at a mall in Setia Alam that took place last weekend.
NCID director Comm Datuk Seri Khaw Kok Chin, who disclosed this, said the departments will join hands with Selangor police as information emerged that the gunman, a local in his 30s who is still at large, has a criminal record for 11 violent and drug-related offences.
“We cannot confirm yet whether the gunman was under the influence of drugs when the incident occurred.
“We will assist Selangor police and the CID in completing the investigation. But we need to arrest him first,” he said at a press conference at Bukit Aman yesterday.
The shooting incident at 10.50pm on Saturday caused panic and chaos at the mall, with shoppers running for cover.
The gunman fired four shots at a cleaner after entering the mall, injuring the latter in his legs and buttocks, before he escaped to another floor where he continued firing additional shots, Selangor police revealed.
After the attack, the shooter fled to the mall’s P2 level, blasting several rounds at a sliding door before entering the parking area.
The suspect then tried to flag down a mall patron, but when the driver did not stop, he fired a shot that hit the car.
Undeterred, the gunman then forced another driver at gunpoint to drive him out of the mall before getting off near the Pandamaran exit of the Kesas Expressway.
Comm Khaw said the NCID will also assist in identifying those linked with the gunman.
“Various other intelligence along with identifying his acquaintances will make tracking down the suspect much easier,” he added.
Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said on Sunday that an intense manhunt was being conducted for the suspect.
The mall opened for business as usual on Sunday after police gave the go-ahead.
