IPOH: The Perak Road Transport Department (JPJ) impounded 143 motorcycles of the 24,494 inspected during a special operation held with the aim of keeping roads safe during Chinese New Year.
State JPJ director Mohammad Yusoff Abustan said 6,039 summonses were issued to 2,511 motorcyclists since Jan 20 for various offences.
Common violations included not having a licence, road tax and illegal modifications.
He said the rate of offences decreased by about 20% compared with last year.
“This indicates that awareness among motorcyclists is improving,” he told reporters after the special operation at Jalan Sultan Iskandar, here on Saturday night, Bernama reported.
Mohammad Yusoff said the special operation, which concluded yesterday, focused on traffic offences, illegal racing and extreme modifications.
During Saturday night’s operation, he said police also found a car which had been illegally modified.
“We have issued summonses, including one against an offender who altered a Perodua Kelisa into a Daihatsu, and replaced its original 600cc engine with a 1,300cc engine without permission,” he said.
Mohammad Yusoff also said in a festive operation against buses, undercover JPJ enforcement officers were deployed with 12 notices issued for violations such as failing to stay in the correct lane and overtaking on double lines.
Asked whether the state JPJ would act against traders selling food at traffic light areas, he said the police would first focus on advocacy before enforcing regulations.
“As stated under Regulation 10A(1) of the Road Traffic Rules 1959, it is an offence to sell or offer goods to individuals in vehicles on roads or intersections. This disrupts traffic, endangers other road users and contributes to congestion.”
