Redefining the modern accountant

As the accounting and finance landscape is reshaped by modern trends, employers are now looking for professionals who have future-ready soft skills alongside traditional technical mastery.

LIKE most things in today’s digital world, the accounting and finance landscape is being reshaped by modern trends.

Once defined by manual ledgers and historic reporting, the profession is now at the forefront of global transformation.

Today’s accountants are no longer just “number crunchers”, but strategic advisors, digital pioneers and guardians of financial sustainability.

As the country works towards achieving net zero emissions by 2050, businesses are facing mounting pressures to adopt environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards, including green finance, which requires a deeper understanding of sustainability risks, impact measurement and regulatory frameworks.

As a result, demand for traditional financial skills is being eclipsed by the need for modern, holistic expertise.

For students and young professionals in this field, the question is no longer just “How do I get certified?” but “How do I remain relevant?”.

Industry demand

In a market saturated with graduates, academic excellence is merely a baseline.

Employers, particularly from the “Big 5” accounting firms, are now looking for professionals who exhibit excellent digital literacy, ethical leadership, adaptability and communication skills.

This essentially means that they are looking for individuals who possess a mastery of artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics and automation, as well as the ability to navigate complex dilemmas with integrity and translate diverse data into actionable insights.

Consequently, the focus for many aspiring accountants is shifting toward finding an educational partner that prioritises high-value, future-ready soft skills alongside traditional technical mastery.

Legacy of excellence

For decades, Sunway TES Centre for Accountancy Excellence (Sunway TES CAE) at Sunway College has been a gold standard for professional accounting education in Malaysia and the region.

Offering pathways to globally recognised qualifications, including ACCA Foundation in Accountancy (ACCA FIA), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Certificate of Finance, Accounting and Business (CFAB) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), it has consistently produced world-class graduates and future industry leaders.

However, recognising that a qualification alone may not be enough to thrive in the modern workplace, the school has launched Sunway TES EDGE to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and workplace reality.

Your competitive advantage

Sunway TES EDGE is an outcome-oriented, industry-tailored programme designed to “Empower, Develop, Grow and Evolve” students beyond academic achievement.

At its core, Sunway TES EDGE reflects a clear belief about education today.

“We believe the true edge lies not just in academic excellence, but in preparing our students to thrive in the workplace and in life,” said Sunway College managing director and Sunway TES CAE founder Professor Teo Ee Sing.

“Through Sunway TES EDGE, we aim to equip aspiring professionals with the mindset, capabilities and values needed to navigate complexity, contribute meaningfully and grow with the profession.”

What sets Sunway TES EDGE apart is its intentional integration of sustainability, industry relevance and differentiated career pathways.

The programme integrates ESG considerations into the student development journey, in line with Malaysia’s regulatory direction.

Students are introduced to ESG concepts and sustainability reporting frameworks within the context of Bursa Malaysia’s sustainability reporting requirements and the Securities Commission’s emphasis on sustainable and responsible investment.

Through applied projects and case-based learning, students gain foundational exposure to how sustainability information is identified, interpreted and communicated in practice.

This supports their understanding of the growing role of sustainability reporting, assurance and sustainable finance within the accounting profession and Malaysia’s capital market ecosystem.

Complementing this is a dual-track pathway that recognises different career aspirations.

Students may pursue a market leader track, which emphasises leadership readiness, stakeholder engagement and client-facing capabilities, or a specialist track, which focuses on technical depth in areas such as ESG integration, digital analytics and assurance practices.

This structure allows students to develop in ways aligned with their strengths and professional interests, without forcing “one size to fit all” outcomes.

The curriculum, conceptualised and developed by Sunway College senior lecturer Low Sze Jein, is delivered through four integrated modules that support both personal and professional growth. At its core, the programme is guided by a deeper intent.

“I care about my students not only for what they will achieve professionally, but for who they become along the way. Their confidence, values and sense of responsibility shape how they show up in their careers, communities and lives. Sunway TES EDGE was created to support that growth with purpose and care,” said Low.

The curriculum begins with Evolve – the Inner EDGE, which focuses on personal development by guiding students to build self-awareness, emotional agility, communication effectiveness and professional presence, laying the foundation for long-term growth and workplace readiness.

Develop – the Digital Innovator builds foundational digital literacy across areas such as data analytics, AI awareness and the use of technology-enabled tools that are increasingly relevant in modern workplaces.

Grow – the Assurance EDGE strengthens practical readiness through structured assurance and audit-based learning, where students apply classroom concepts in realistic scenarios that reflect common professional environments.

Empower – the Global Change Leader introduces students to sustainability and ESG-related issues, including foundational exposure to IFRS S1 and S2 concepts and relevant industry context, helping students appreciate how business decisions and reporting connect to wider stakeholder expectations.

Together, these modules support students in becoming not only academically capable but also more self-aware, adaptable and better prepared to meet workplace expectations with clarity and professionalism.

In the modern world, a sustainable education equips students not only to earn professional qualifications but also to develop capabilities that remain valuable as the profession evolves.

A sustainable education pathway

For parents and students, choosing where to pursue an accounting education is about more than reputation alone. It is about selecting a pathway that balances academic rigour with practical relevance.

A sustainable education equips students not only to earn professional qualifications but also to develop capabilities that remain valuable as the profession evolves.

Skills such as judgment, adaptability, communication and ethical awareness cannot be automated, yet they are increasingly expected in the workplace.

By choosing a pathway that emphasises real-world readiness and personal development alongside technical excellence, students build a foundation for long-term relevance in a highly competitive and changing industry.

Applications for the February intake at Sunway TES are now in progress. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply early to secure their place and begin a journey designed for sustained growth and professional confidence.
