Missing teen found drowned in Kota Belud


KOTA KINABALU: A teenager who went missing during a family outing by the river in Kota Belud on Sunday (Feb 9) afternoon has been found dead.

The body of the 16-year-old, who was seen struggling while swimming near the Tan Chin Nam stone factory, was found by rescue workers at 3.54pm on Monday (Feb 10).

Kota Belud fire station chief Muhammad Syazwan Latun said the girl's body was found by the public some 3.5km from where she was last seen.

He said her body was retrieved and handed over to police for further action.

Authorities wrapped up their operations on-site at 5pm.

It was earlier reported that firemen, the police and villagers were searching the river and its banks after a distress call was received just before 4pm on Sunday.

Additional assistance including the K9 unit was brought in early Monday as the search continued.
