A GERMAN tourist in India was killed after trying to ride his bike around a wild elephant which was seen walking along a road, Makkal Osai reported.

The 77-year-old man was visiting a tiger reserve in Valparai town in Tamil Nadu when he came across the animal.

Other travellers and residents who saw the elephant along the road had stopped their vehicles to give the animal a wide berth.

Apparently, local officers, who were present, had asked the German visitor to wait but he attempted to ride the scooter around the elephant.

The elephant was spooked and grabbed the German.

It also trashed the scooter.

Bystanders tried to make as much noise as possible to scare away the elephant and save the man.

The victim was rushed to hospital but died despite treatment, an officer reported.

The Tamil Nadu forestry department has stepped up patrols in the area.
