Firearms training a unique experience for PLKN 3.0 recruits, says director

KUALA LUMPUR: Firearms training is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for participants of the National Service Training Programme (PLKN) 3.0, says the National Service Training Department.

Its director, Mej-Jen Datuk Ya’cob Samiran, said the experience is part of the programme’s curriculum, ensuring all recruits undergo basic military training.

"They are given hands-on experience in firearms shooting as part of their training. They are taught how to handle and operate a rifle properly.

"We are using the M16 rifle, the same weapon used for preliminary training in the Territorial Army (Askar Wataniah)," he said when met at the Sungai Besi military camp.

He assured parents that stringent safety procedures are in place during the training.

"Strict protocols are followed. The recruits are properly supervised and are never left on their own.

"The training is conducted in a controlled environment. This may be an experience they will never have again unless they join the Territorial Army, the Armed Forces, or other enforcement agencies," he said.

On the retention rate of this trial batch, Ya’cob acknowledged that some participants had withdrawn due to medical reasons to prevent further injuries during training.

"God willing, the programme has gone smoothly. However, a few recruits have pulled out due to medical issues.

"As of now, the number of medical pullouts stands at around five," he said.

Regarding participants who are employed, he explained that those selected for PLKN 3.0 must seek permission from their employers if their training period clashes with work commitments.

"Employers must justify if they are unable to release their employees for training. A deferment must be requested if there are any obstructions," he said.

PLKN 3.0 began on Jan 12 with 142 volunteer trainees aged 18 to 25, including 44 women.

For the second and third series, over 1,000 participants nationwide are expected to take part from May 11 to June 24 and Sept 7 to Oct 21, respectively.
