55 illegal structures in KK torn down


KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s squatter demolition exercise is continuing with its first operation of the year involving 55 illegal structures in the city.

The state police contingent headquarters said the exercise on Thursday was conducted with various government agencies including the National Registration Department, City Hall, Sabah Electricity, Land and Survey Department, and the Chief Minister’s Department.

In a statement, it said the structures were built illegally and did not comply with required safety conditions and standards.

The exercise was a continuation of the effort to rid Sabah of illegal settlements and squatters, and to also ensure the safety and comfort of residents, the statement said.

It said such operations would continue as state authorities strive to fight against crime, illegal immigrants, drug abuse and social ills in the city and surrounding areas.

The series of demolition exercises led to some state leaders and NGOs calling it inhumane, while others gave their backing.

Those who opposed called for alternative accommodation to be provided for the squatters, while the other group said the squatters should rent or find their own homes instead of hoping for free lodging.
