KUALA LUMPUR: U Mobile, chosen as Malaysia’s second 5G network provider, is set to receive its Award Notice this month (February), the Dewan Rakyat was informed.
The Communications Ministry stated this would enable U Mobile to commence the development of the second 5G network, pending approval of their detailed business plan.
This plan is currently under evaluation by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
"U Mobile must first resolve several obligations under the Shareholder Agreement signed with telecommunication providers and DNB," the ministry mentioned in a written reply on Thursday (Feb 6).
This process is expected to take at least five months.
However, U Mobile can begin initial work at sites once the business plan is approved by MCMC.
The ministry's response was to a query from Chong Zhemin (PH-Kampar) regarding the timeline for U Mobile's 5G rollout and when users might benefit.
In November 2024, U Mobile was selected to implement Malaysia’s second 5G network, transitioning the nation from a single wholesale network to a dual-network system after extensive debate.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil previously reported to the Dewan Rakyat that U Mobile was appointed via a tender process overseen by MCMC.
