Eight arrested in Sarawak for alleged graft

PETALING JAYA: Eight people, including three business owners and a civil engineer, have been detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over alleged corruption.

Sources said they were arrested in Sarawak following investigations related to the monopolisation of projects by two governmental departments across two districts in the state.

The arrests were made during a special operation between 7am and 12pm on Tuesday (Feb 4).

"Preliminary investigations showed that these activities took place since 2006, and the contractor involved had used their license while reaping in commissions of up to 10% of the project's valuation," sources said.

The engineer arrested was also believed to have received pay for helping to secure the projects.

A car, cash and jewellery worth an estimated RM450,000 were seized during the operation.

MACC deputy chief commissioner (Operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya confirmed the arrest.
