Baseless to accuse PM of treason over addendum order, says Backbenchers Club

KUALA LUMPUR: Accusations that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has committed treason against the King and the royal institution are baseless, says the Backbenchers Club (BBC).

This follows claims by Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin on Tuesday (Feb 4) that the government’s alleged attempt to conceal the addendum order on house arrest for Datuk Seri Najib Razak amounted to “an act of treason” against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

BBC chairman Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah dismissed the allegations, stating that Anwar had clarified the addendum was never handed to him.

“The Prime Minister also emphasised that matters related to the addendum fall under the jurisdiction of the Attorney General’s Chambers.

“Stating facts cannot be deemed treason,” he told a press conference here on Wednesday (Feb 5).

Mohd Shahar described the accusations as a political ploy to mislead the public for the Opposition’s own gain.

“Claims that investors will lose interest in Malaysia due to treason are also baseless.

“Investor decisions are based on economic stability, investor-friendly policies, and confidence in the leadership.

“Such accusations reflect immature politics and risk straining relations between the government and the royal institution while damaging the country’s image on the global stage,” he said.

He added that the Prime Minister has always shown the highest respect for the royal institution and remains committed to upholding the constitutional monarchy.

“The government acts in accordance with the Constitution and prioritises the nation’s interests.

“The public should reject slanderous politics and focus on efforts to develop the country,” he said.

On Tuesday, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul ruled that the issue of the addendum should not be raised during parliamentary debates.

Johari made his ruling following heated exchanges from both sides of the House.

Hamzah had raised the issue during the debate and accused the Prime Minister of treason for his silence.
