JOHOR BARU: Johor police have declared the six-day Ops Selamat, held during the Chinese New Year celebrations, a success due to a drop in road accident cases.
State police chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar stated that Ops Selamat, conducted from Jan 28 to Sunday (Feb 2) nationwide, concluded on Monday (Feb 3).
"Overall, Johor police showed good performance with a drop in accident rates by 52 cases, equating to a 4.5% decrease to 1,169 cases from 1,221 in the previous operation," he said.
Comm Kumar added that fatal accidents also decreased by five cases, a 62.5% reduction from 13 cases in the previous Ops Selamat.
The number of deaths fell to eight in this year’s Ops Selamat compared to 16 previously.
He noted that police arrested 40 individuals for various traffic offences, including driving under the influence of alcohol and driving dangerously.
"Besides enforcement, police also focused on educating road users, resulting in increased awareness of road rules during this year’s operation," he said.
In this Ops Selamat, a total of 11,645 traffic summonses were issued, compared to 23,386 in the previous operation.
This showed a decrease of 11,741 summonses, with the main offence being speeding, for which 3,963 summonses were issued.
For the safe home campaign held alongside Ops Selamat, police received 542 applications through the volunteer smartphone patrol (VSP) apps and forms at police stations.
"Police carried out 3,505 visits and patrols at registered houses, and I am pleased to announce that there were zero break-in cases recorded during this period," Comm Kumar said.
