BUTTERWORTH: Penang police will ensure security and traffic issues are well handled throughout Asean-related meetings during Malaysia’s chairmanship in 2025, of which several sessions are slated to take place in the state, says the state police chief.

Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the state police contingent will be out in full force to secure the smooth running of Asean-related meetings.

“The state police have a large capacity and will be able to handle security and traffic during the meetings.

“We will make use of all our resources and place police officers and personnel at key locations during the events,” he said at a press conference after Ops Selamat for Chinese New Year at the Sungai Dua toll plaza.

Penang will host 13 major meetings involving discussions at the working, senior official and ministerial levels to be organised by seven ministries during Malaysia’s Asean chairmanship this year.

Comm Hamzah said the police have held several sessions with local authorities regarding the meetings that will be held in Penang.

When asked about Penang being named as the safest state in Malaysia, he expressed gratitude to the police force in the state for their work.

“Crime cases in the state have gone down. We have taken comprehensive steps to ensure Penang is safe and when there are large events held in Penang, we are extra vigilant.

“We will work together to overcome all obstacles and ensure the safety of the people,” he said.
