Couple jointly charged with newborn girl’s murder

SEREMBAN: A young couple were jointly charged at a Magistrate’s Court here with the murder of a newborn baby girl.

No plea was recorded from Nurul Ain Haslan, 19, and Muhammad Emer Irfan Hasren, 21, when they were brought before magistrate Nurul Saqinah Rosli.

They were accused of committing the offence between 5.30am and 4pm on Jan 21 at a house in Teluk Kemang, Port Dickson.

Section 302 of the Penal Code and Section 34 of the same legislation apply to the charge of murder.

Offenders can be sentenced to death or jailed between 30 and 40 years and whipped a minimum of 12 times upon conviction.

Muhammad Emer is unemployed while Nurul Ain works part-time at a fast food outlet.

Deputy public prosecutor Nadia Ezzati Mohd Zainal asked the court for another date as the post-mortem, chemistry, forensic and medical reports were not ready.

She also refused to offer bail to the suspects.

Magistrate Nurul Saqinah fixed Feb 27 for remention at the Port Dickson Magistrate’s Court.

The suspects were detained last week after police found the remains of a baby girl stuffed in a bag inside a room of a house.

The infant had injuries believed to have been caused by a knife.

Police were alerted to the case by staff at the Port Dickson hospital on Jan 21 when Nurul Ain, who was seeking post-natal treatment, could not produce her baby when asked by doctors.

A preliminary police probe indicated that the couple had not wanted their families to know about the birth.

Police have also seized a knife that was believed to have been used in the crime.
