Anwar directs action for flood-affected SPM candidates in Sabah, Sarawak

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directed state education departments to implement necessary actions that will allow SPM candidates impacted by the floods in Sabah and Sarawak to take their exams safely.

“I am saddened by the worsening floods in Sabah and Sarawak,” he said in a Facebook post on Thursday (Jan 30), expressing his condolences to flood victims.

Anwar said he has also instructed the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) to update and coordinate its machinery for flood relief work, which is comprised of state and federal agencies.

“The priority at the moment is the welfare of flood victims as well as the safety of the people in the affected areas,” he said.

Similarly, the state education departments have been instructed to do what is necessary to ensure that affected SPM candidates can sit for their examinations.

“The Ihsan Madani squad will also assist flood victims at temporary relief centres and are prepared for post-flood duties,” he said.

“May all victims affected by the floods be given the patience and strength throughout these trying times,” he said.

As of 8pm on Wednesday (Jan 29), the number of flood evacuees relocated to temporary relief centres (PPS) in Sarawak and Sabah had climbed to 4,000, up from 1,250 earlier.
