Trade Ministry seizes 903 LPG cylinders from unlicensed premises in Johor

KULAI: More than 900 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanks worth RM80,000 were seized by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) following a raid here.

Johor KPDN director Lilis Saslinda Pornomo (pic) said four foreigners in their 30s, believed to be workers at the storage facility, were also arrested during the raid on Tuesday (Jan 28).

“During the inspection, we found that the LPG was being used for decanting, which involves transferring LPG from 14kg subsidised cylinders to 50kg cylinders meant for industrial use.

“Further checks also revealed that the storage facility did not have a permit or license to store the controlled LPG,” she said in a statement.

She added that a total of 903 cylinders, including empty ones, were seized during the operation.

“We also seized several documents, and the value of the seized items is estimated to be about RM80,000,” she said.

Lilis Saslinda said the case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 for storing controlled items without a valid license or storage permit.

“Further investigations are being conducted to identify individuals or companies involved in the activity.

“We are also investigating the distribution chain, including the source of the LPG,” she said, adding that the Ministry views the matter seriously.

She said that if convicted, offenders may face a fine of up to RM1mil or a maximum of three years imprisonment, or both, for the first offence.

For organisations or corporations, the fine may reach up to RM2mil for the first offence and RM5mil for subsequent offences.
