MELAKA: A surprise encounter with an Asian water monitor made a lasting impression on China’s Culture and Tourism Minister Sun Yeli during his recent visit to the historic city.
Special advisor on investment and China Affairs to the Melaka Chief Minister, Datuk Wira Lim Ban Hong, said the unexpected reptile sighting occurred while Sun Yeli was enjoying the Melaka River Cruise on Saturday (Jan 25).
“The monitor lizard appeared along the riverbank during the cruise, and he (Sun Yeli) was fascinated by the sight of such a large reptile, which is rare in China.
"It’s a testament to the health of the river’s ecosystem,” Lim said on Sunday (Jan 26).
Sungai Melaka is home to the water monitor (Varanus salvator), which can grow up to 3m in length and is considered the second largest lizard species after the Komodo dragon.
Lim said the minister was also treated to local gastronomic offerings including Malaysia’s prized Musang King and Black Thorn durian, fresh Klebang coconut, and other local produce.
“He gave a big thumbs-up to the durians and other fruits,” Lim noted.
The minister also indulged in authentic Peranakan Chinese cuisine and was introduced to the rich heritage of the Baba and Nyonya communities.
Lim said the visit reflected the long-standing diplomatic relationship between China and Melaka, a connection steeped in history and shared cultural values.
Lim said Sun Yeli also toured some of Melaka’s notable landmarks, including Jonker Walk and the Cheng Ho Museum.
"He also witnessed how the local Chinese community was preparing to celebrate the Year of the Wooden Snake, deepening his appreciation for the state’s cultural preservation efforts," he said.
"The visit, lasting from 10am to 2pm, left the honourable minister highly impressed with Melaka’s commitment to heritage preservation, its vibrant cultural tapestry, and the natural beauty of its river ecosystem," he said.
