Foreign men shot after alleged attack on MMEA officers off Banting

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) officers on patrol shot two foreign men in waters off Tanjung Rhu, Banting on Friday (Jan 24) morning after allegedly being attacked by them.

The men were part of a group of five who reportedly rammed their fibreglass boat against the MMEA vessel four times before two armed with machetes attempted to attack the officers, leading them to fire shots in self-defence

Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the MMEA later received information from the public about a boat stranded on Banting shores at about 9am on Friday.

"MMEA officers went to the location and discovered two unconscious men before towing the boat to Pulau Carey in Port Klang and calling an ambulance.

Checks revealed one of the men had died while the other survived but is in critical condition,” said Comm Hussein.

He added on Saturday (Jan 25) that the injured suspect was then sent to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah in Klang for treatment.

Meanwhile, Comm Hussein said a medical officer from Hospital Sultan Idris Shah in Serdang had lodged a report stating three foreign men had gone to the hospital with gunshot wounds.

"We are investigating under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and Section 186 of the same code for impeding public officers from carrying out their duties."

"We are also investigating under Section 39 of the Firearms Act 1960," he added.

Earlier, it was reported that three foreign men, believed to have been shot, had sought treatment at Hospital Sultan Idris Shah.

The three men were sent to the hospital at about 7.30am on Friday (Jan 24).

Sources said the victims suffered gunshot wounds and were sent to the hospital by an unknown individual.

"Two of them were wearing wet clothing while the other victim was only wearing boxer shorts. They also did not have any identification documents," sources said.

All victims gave conflicting reasons when asked about their injuries, but upon inspection, it was discovered that they had been shot.

It is learnt that the hospital administration has lodged a police report.
