Talk to us, TNB tells landlords of crypto tenants

IPOH: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is looking to engage with landlords who are saddled with bills of up to millions of ringgit due to their tenants making illegal electricity connections for cryptocurrency mining activities.

The utility company said it hopes to talk with these affected property owners to find an amicable solution.

This came about following news reports that a hair salon owner ended up with a RM1.2mil bill after renting out her shop lot for just two months.

The owner and several other landlords in a similar predicament gave a press conference on Wednesday, arranged by Gopeng MP Tan Kar Hing.

In a statement to The Star yesterday, TNB said its officials had contacted Tan’s office with a plan to engage with these property owners.

“Additionally, we would like to remind property owners to submit a Change of Tenancy (COT) request with TNB whenever new tenants occupy their premises.

“This will help prevent future disputes or liabilities related to electricity accounts,” it added.

TNB also said customers with billing and account-related questions could contact it via a private message on Facebook TNB Careline (available 24/7) or call 1-300-88-5454 from 8am to 7pm (Monday-Friday) or 8am to 5pm on weekends and public holidays.

During the press conference on Wednesday, Tan said that more than 60 homeowners and shop lot owners had fallen victim to such illegal electricity connections by tenants involved in cryptocurrency mining.

Their bills ranged from RM30,000 to as much as RM1.2mil, he said, adding that landlords from Gopeng, Manjung and Sitiawan had approached him.
