PUTRAJAYA: A proposal has been suggested for the police to secure a dedicated slice of the 5G network bandwidth to enhance law enforcement, says Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
He said the idea has been discussed and he urged the Royal Malaysian Police Force (PDRM) to consider the service which will enable it to access needed data from all modes.
He said access to a secure and reliable bandwidth, independent of the general public network could greatly benefit any organisation, especially law enforcement agencies, with critical needs for data security and network stability.
As such, he suggested that agencies such as PDRM tap into the benefits of this “secure slice” feature, which is part of the broader advancements being discussed globally.
Fahmi said this to the media after appearing as a panellist at a forum held in conjunction with the Asia International Security Summit and Expo (AISSE) 2025 here yesterday.
“The special slice of 5G for PDRM is a feature of the 5G spectrum for a private 5G local network.
“This is something that the industry has been discussing by enabling a dual network approach, and some of the measures that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will be taking would be to enable the realisation of a secured slice for PDRM.
“A secure slice of 5G means that bandwidth is dedicated to that organisation, it can be for law enforcement or for any company to make use of the local 5G network.
“This would particularly be what is known as the Internet of Things (IOT) to pull together data from many different devices and sensors across the factory floor,” he added.
Earlier, during the fireside chat with chief information officer of U Mobile Neil Tomkinson, Fahmi said that the secured slice of 5G dedicated for PDRM would require certain types of technology.
On Nov 1, MCMC announced that the second 5G network in Malaysia will be implemented by U Mobile Sdn Bhd after it had conducted a detailed technical and commercial evaluation to select the mobile network operator for the project.
U Mobile chairman Tan Sri Vincent Tan said that the company plans to roll out the country’s second 5G network within the next 15 to 18 months.
