IPOH: About RM18,000 worth of drugs have been seized at the lock-up of the Lumut police station.
The drugs – 16 small plastic tubes containing 109g of methamphetamine, 16 tubes containing 110g of heroin and 23 tubes containing 142g of dried cannabis leaves – were discovered during a check by the Manjung police around 8.30am on Tuesday.
Perak police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said three men – two detainees, in their 40s, and a police constable, in his 30s – were arrested to assist in investigations.
He added that the two detainees, who were due to be charged with drug-related offences, had also tested positive for drugs.
“All three have been remanded from Aug 12 to 18 to facilitate investigations under Section 39B and Section 15 (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
“Police are serious when it comes to drug abuse and trafficking activities, especially when it involves police premises.”
Comm Mohd Alwi said investigations were ongoing to determine how the drugs were smuggled onto the premises.
“We will investigate the case transparently and action will be taken based on the facts,” he told a press conference at a drug disposal event at the state police contingent headquarters here yesterday.
He urged those with information to channel them to the police.
It was reported in May that mobile phones, drugs, tobacco, money and communication equipment were found during an inspection on four detainees in a cell at the lock-up of the Ipoh district police station.
Meanwhile, Comm Mohd Alwi said about RM4mil worth of drugs from 5,000 completed court cases between 2000 and 2025 were to be disposed of at the event.
He added that as of Aug 10 this year, police have arrested 12,916 people for various drugs-related offences and that about RM46mil worth of drugs have been seized this year, which was a record high for the state.
A total of 4,529 investigation papers have been opened, with 96% of the suspects charged.
